The Doctor Muñoz Cariñanos Hospital in Seville is today one of the most modern and strategically important healthcare centers in Andalusia. Completely renovated and rehabilitated after years of neglect, this former military hospital is now a leading healthcare facility, equipped with advanced technologies and designed to meet the growing needs of the Andalusian population.
The Doctor Muñoz Cariñanos Hospital is the result of a vast rehabilitation project carried out by the Servicio Andaluz de Salud. Formerly known as the Vigil de Quiñones Hospital or the Military Hospital of Seville, it underwent an ambitious renovation program, carried out in several phases, to transform it into a modern and efficient hospital center.
With an area of over 35,000 m² and an investment exceeding 47 million euros, the facility is now fully functional and integrated into the network of the Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío, one of the most important in the region.
The new hospital has nine fully operational floors equipped with state-of-the-art technology for diagnosis, surgery, and inpatient care. It offers:
375 beds, including 21 in day hospital
25 beds in the intensive care unit (ICU)
10 of the most modern operating theaters in Spain
7 high-tech endoscopy rooms
Specialized units, including a unit for spinal cord injury patients and a mental health unit for adolescents and adults
These infrastructures allow the hospital to respond effectively to the medical needs of the inhabitants of Seville and its province.
The Doctor Muñoz Cariñanos Hospital played a crucial role from its partial opening in 2021, initially serving as a Covid emergency center with three operational floors. During its first year of operation, it treated more than 4,000 patients affected by the coronavirus, strengthening the region's healthcare capacity in a critical situation.
Over the years, the hospital has increased its activity to reach more than 12,000 interventions and 4,500 hospital admissions in 2024, consolidating its place as a reference institution.
The renovation project at Doctor Muñoz Cariñanos Hospital has received several prestigious awards. In 2024, it won the award for best hospital transformation design at the European Healthcare Design Awards. In 2025, it was voted Europe's best hospital renovation of the decade, recognizing its innovation, quality, and the efficiency of the work carried out during the pandemic.
This European recognition testifies to the success of the project and the commitment of the Junta de Andalucía to the modernization of the public health system.
Doctor Muñoz Cariñanos Hospital offers a wide range of medical and hospital services, including:
Internal medicine
General and specialized surgery
Advanced diagnostic units
Outpatient consultations
Rehabilitation services
Adult and adolescent mental health
These services are integrated into the Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío network, allowing for optimal continuity of care.
The transformation of the former military hospital into the Doctor Muñoz Cariñanos Hospital illustrates the Andalusian government's commitment to strengthening public health. With an initial investment of 74 million euros and work carried out despite the constraints of the pandemic, this facility has become one of the cornerstones of Seville's hospital system.
Today it stands as a symbol of modernization, innovation and commitment to the citizens of Andalusia.
