The Hassan Tower in Rabat, Experience Under the Spotlights
Once again, the Almohad Caliphate impresses Moroccan architectural heritage with a main attraction in the capital, Rabat. The Hassan Tower of Rabat, The minaret of the unfinished mosque during the reign of Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur, the 3rd caliph of the same family line in 1195.

The Hassan Tower of Rabat or Sawm'at Hassan in Arabic, referring to the important well of the minaret following the particular style of Moroccan and Spanish architecture of the same period. The minaret was to be the largest of its type ever in the world, but – unfortunately – the construction processes came to a sudden halt after the sudden death of al-Mansur in 1199.
The red sandstone building of the Hassan Tower rises to 44m with approximately 86m in height. Accompanied by a few columns formerly placed before work on the mosque was abandoned. In the close vicinity is the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, with the tower and earlier works of the mosque forming a noble complex adding paramount value to the city – the historic architecture of Rabat.
